How much does an ecommerce website cost?

An online store is not simply a website with product cards. It is a sales and operations system that has to handle products, payments, orders, customers, transactional communication and exceptions. Cost grows with operational complexity, not only with the number of screens.

An online store is not simply a website with product cards. It is a sales and operations system that has to handle products, payments, orders, customers, transactional communication and exceptions. Cost grows with operational complexity, not only with the number of screens.

Catalog complexity matters

A store with twenty simple products is very different from one with thousands of SKUs, variants, filters, bundles or complex pricing. Product data may need cleaning, migration or connection to an ERP or inventory system.

Good information architecture affects both conversion and the workload of maintaining the catalog.

Checkout and payments need end-to-end testing

Payment provider integration is only one part of checkout. Taxes, shipping, coupons, guest checkout, customer accounts, confirmation emails and failed-payment states all need decisions and testing.

The store must also reflect the real fulfilment process; otherwise staff compensate manually after every order.

Design depth changes cost

A standard theme can launch faster and cheaper. A bespoke store may justify deeper product storytelling, custom collection pages, motion and a more distinctive brand experience.

Prioritise custom design where it affects trust, product understanding and conversion rather than customising every screen for novelty.

Integrations are often the largest variable

ERP, warehouse, invoicing, loyalty, CRM and shipping APIs introduce dependencies outside the website. Their documentation and reliability affect implementation time.

A good proposal separates known integration work from assumptions so risk is visible before development starts.

Budget for the operation after launch

Hosting, licences, maintenance, product administration, analytics and campaign work continue after launch. Make sure ownership is clear.
